Edith Emily 'Ellie' Hawke nee Lee was the mother of Bob Hawke (one time Prime Minister of Australia).
She was born to William Lee and Matilda Broster, both of Cornish descent, in the South Australian town of Greens Plains in 1898. Her father Will, who had begun life in poverty, became a wheat and barley farmer on the Yorke peninsula. Ellie completed school and teachers college, maintaining a life long commitment to the education of girls. Like her father, she was a committed Methodist and lay preacher, and struggled againist convention for the right to have a career as a teacher. She was in charge of her third school at Forster when she met Clem Hawke. They married in June 1920 at Thebarton Methodist church in Adelaide. A few weeks later, she was pregnant and abandoned teaching. Their first child was born at Houghton in the Adelaide Hills where Clem, still unordained, had been invited to become minister. She became heavily involved in the Womens christian Temperance Union, particulary in Perth after 1939, and took in boarders. She died in Perth in Sep 1979.
