Transcript of the Miller Lee letter as it appears in the book on Gresham Lee by R.E. Lee. The transcript was provided to R.E. Lee by a Barbara L. McKelvey, a Miller Lee descendant.

Rusk City March 30, 1850

I, Miller Lee, was born on the first day of July 1769 in Buckingham Co. in the State of Virginia. My father's name was Richard Lee, raised in Buckingham Co. and lived there most of his life until just before he died. He moved to Ballston, near Arlington, Va. There my mother died. He then moved to Jackson, Tn. where he died. His father came from England, his mother from Wales. My mother's name before marriage was Elizabeth Miller. Her father and mother were from Germany. She was born in the State of Delaware and she moved to Virginia. The Indians killed her father. Her mother died when she was about 12 years of age. She was my father's second wife. Richard was the first child, then Miller, John, Barnett, Agnes, Arthur who died at three weeks of age, then Stephen, the last. My wife's father was James Carson. Her mother before marriage was Mary Helm. They were raised nearby so to the north. Her parents moved to Campbell Co. Va. There James Carson died. His widow went to West Tenn. There she died at about 94 years of age. James Carson was 70. My wife before marriage was Margaret Carson. We were married in Campbell Co., Va. on 6th of Jan. 1798. About a year later moved to Logan Co. in a few more years to Butler Co. Lived there about 12 years. Then back to Logan Co. on or near the "Big Whipporwill." Lived there three years, then to Christian Co. There we buried our 8th child, 11 months old. Stayed there three years. Had another son and in the Fall of 1818 moved to Tallageda Co. Last of Feb. A.D. 1847 moved to Caddo Parish, La. Then last of Jan. 1848, moved to Rusk Co. on or near Main Rabbit Creek.

A note by the transcriber says: "Miller Lee was 81 when he wrote the letter and adds that there is more in the letter but no names or dates."

———

Middle name was probably "Fitzhugh". Much of the information about Jehu's descendants comes from Annette Dinwoodey. From Jim Short (email hidden) : In the 1850 Census for Jackson County, in District 2, Family No. 827 lists Susannah Lee 60 yrs old, Agnes Short 77 yrs old, and John Lee 17 yrs old. Susannah is the eldest daughter of William Short, brother to my 3rd Great Grandfather. According to family tradition, Susannah is the common-law wife of Jehu Lee, after the death of his wife. (There is also a few people who think that she may have been common-law wife of Jehu's son, Barnett Lee. But I doubt that.) Susannah Short was never married to Jehu Lee (or anyone else), but she did use the Lee Familv name and named her son John Lee. Jehu Lee is said to have named John Lee in his will, and left some money to him. By 1855 both Susannah and John had died. A Court Case in Gainsboro in July 1855 stated that John Lee was illegitimate, and therefore, his Grandmother Agnes Short could not inherit his land. (I find no further record of Agnes Shortafter this court case.) Father: Richard Henry LEE b: ABT. 1710 in Albemarle County, Virginia Mother: Elizabeth MILLER b: ABT. 1740 in Delaware

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jehu by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jehu:

I’m seeing a lot mix ups between Jessie Lee-9264 and his half brother Jehu Lee-9133. I think part of the problem is that somebody along the way decided to change Jehu’s name to Jesse Fitzhugh and that started the mixups between the brothers. I still haven’t found any records showing Jehu was in fact named Jesse Fitzhugh Lee. Does anyone have any records to share proving his name was Jessie Fitzhugh Lee?

Lee-9270 and Lee-9133 appear to represent the same person because: same/similar dates, same father, same wife

I agree and have approved the match on my end.

Jehu Lee-9270 is married to Mary Elizabeth aka Polly Meadows -2554. Jesse Fitzhugh Lee -9133 is also married to Meadows-2554. They both have children listed from the same marriage. It needs to be merged. However, Lee-9270 father is Richard Henry Lee II Lee-9270. While Jesse Fitzhugh Lee-9133 father is listed as Joshua Lee 27243. How do you merge 2 people with different fathers. Both father's are married to Elizabeth Miller. Jehu's mom is Miller 17084 While Jesse Fitzhugh mom is Miller-21184. Birthdates are different but death date and place of death are the same.

What to do about Joshua?

Hello

Have you contacted the profile manager of Jesse Fitzhugh Lee -9133 and asked why he is linked to a Joshua Lee as the father? It appears the manager is a 5th great grandson. Merging will create too many problems without the correct father figured out. That should be your first step.

Lee-45333 and Lee-9270 do not represent the same person because: These are not the same individual. One is listed as an enslaved person whose slave owner was Col Henry Lee who was married to Lucy Grymes. This is a different line of the Lee family.

You are trying to merge a black enslaved person (who had the wrong father linked as his father would be unknown) with a white son of Richard Henry Lee. Please look at the profile of of Lee-4533 again and you will see this. Lee-4533 is not the same as Lee-9270

Lee-45333 and Lee-9270 do not represent the same person because: Lee-45333 is the profile of a black man enslaved by Col Henry Lee (husband of Lucy Grymes). Someone has wrongly attached Richard Henry Lee as his father.

Lee-27242 and Lee-9133 appear to represent the same person because: while neither profile has sources, is it possible that these are intended to be the same person?

Lee-9133 and Lee-25043 appear to represent the same person because: Daniel Lee is my 5th gr grandfather and son of Jesse Jehu Fitzhugh Lee
