Biography

John was born about 1758 in Albemarle County, Virginia Colony (Amherst formed from Albemarle in 1761). He was the son of John Mask Leak and Ann Sales. He passed away on 24 August 1840 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[1]

John served in the Revolutionary War in 1777 and 1781. He enlisted from Amherst County, Virginia, about 1777 and served successively one month each under Capt. David Shelton, Capt. John Diggs, Capt. John Christian, all under Col. Taylor, acting as guard for prisoners at Albemarle Barracks. At the end of 1780 or January 1781 he enlisted again and served three months in Capt. Richard Ballinger's and Joseph Tusker's Virginia Companies. He served three months beginning 1 August 1781 in Col. Daniel Gaines' Virginia Regiment and was at the Siege of Yorktown. He served a total of at least nine months. He applied for a pension based on that service on 21 October 1833 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, and was awarded a pension of $30 per annum beginning retroactively on 4 March 1831.[1]

John remained in Amherst County after the war until 1795 when he moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia; in 1811 to Knox County, Tennessee; in 1821 to Wilson County, Tennessee; and finally about 1830 to Rutherford County, Tennessee where he remained.[1]

Marriage

John married Hannah Luttrell about 1779 in Amherst County, Virginia. They had about eight or nine children; the number is uncertain. John left no will and there are no birth records extant for the children. 1810 Census shows eight children in the household.

Census

Census: 1790 Federal, early list
Date: 1785
Place: Albemarle County, Virginia[2]
Record lists Mask Leak with 8 white persons in the household. This may be the record for John's father, or for John himself; it is not clear. Eight persons are listed in the household. That seems too many to be John, since he only married about 1779 and probably would not have had six children in the intervening years.
Census: 1810 Federal
Date: 6 August 1810
Place: Rockbridge County, Virginia[3]
In the household are Mask Leek, age 45 and over; wife age 45 and over; 1 male under 10; 1 male and 2 females age 10-15; 2 males and 1 female age 16-25; 1 male age 26-44.
Census: 1840 Federal
Date: 1 June 1840
Place: Rutherford County, Tennessee[4]
John M. Leak is listed as a Pensioner, age 88, on the 1840 Federal Census. He is listed alone as head of household; living next door to Mask Leak, age 30-39, and his wife and children.
