Bertha Lees is the daughter of Robert and Frances Lees. Robert married Frances in 1893. Frances was born in Indiana, as was her mother. Her father was b. in VA. By1900 Robert and Frances had had one child, a daughter, Bertha, born in Indiana in March 1896. In 1900, they lived in Pipe Creek Township, Bunker Hill Village, Miami County, Indiana. The household included Robert Lees, 38, b. Dec 1862, a carpenter, who rented their house; his wife Frances, 29, b. Dec 1871; their daughter Bertha A., 4, b. March 1896; and Robert’s widowed father, Romanus, 74, b. Sept 1826, whose parents were born in Pennsylvania. Also living with them were Robert’s brother, his wife and child: Perry Lees, 24, b. Jan 1876 in Indiana, a day laborer; his wife Martha, 22, b. Dec 1878 in Indiana, whose parents were born in Kentucky; and their daughter Elsie, 1, b. May 1899 in Indiana. Perry and Martha Lees had been married for four years and had had one child. All the adults in the household could read and write. 
In 1910, her family lived at 29 W. Warren St., Washington, Miami, Indiana. The household included Robert Lees, 45, a carpenter (buildings), who rented the family home; and his wife Mary (Frances), F., 32. They had been married for 17 years, and had had one child. It was Robert’s second marriage, and Mary Frances’ first. Also living with them was their daughter, Bertha A., 14, a student; and Robert’s nephew, Asa Lees (son of Abraham), 21, a chef at a restaurant. Asa was born around 1889 in Indiana. 
Bertha married William E. Deen on 15 April 1917 in Miami County, Indiana. Thomas J. Brock officiated the ceremony. Bertha was 21, born 12 March 1896 in Bunker Hill, IN, and was a resident of Peru, IN. It was her first marriage. Her parents, Robert M. Lees was a bridge foreman, b. In Miami County, IN; and her mother, Frances (Pierce) Lees b. In Cicero, IN, were both residents of Peru, IN. William was 20, b. 5 Jan 1897 in Peru, IN, a machinist, and a resident of Peru, IN. This was his first marriage. His parents, William H. Deen, b. near Royal Center, IN, was a boilermaker; and his mother, Kate (Wade) Deen, b. Lima, Ohio, were both residents of Peru, Indiana. 
Bertha died, a widow, at the age of 97-98, in 1994. She is buried with her husband William in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, Indiana.
