She married Alfred in 1871 at age 21.
[1]
Like her father, Alfred was a coal miner.
Alfred left his young family to come to the US. By 1882 he had saved up $160 for Eliza and the girls to join him. They came over on a small sailing vessel and a very rough time of it. The voyage took two weeks and there was a shortage of food.
After Eliza joined Alfred they lived in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, for two years. Alfred left again to go further West. He settled in Iowa and soon sent for them. They lived in Keb, Iowa, for three years, and then moved to Ottumwa.
After Alfred's untimely, accidental death in the mines in 1897, Eliza continued to raise her family in Ottumwa.
