Biography

No record of a baptism for Sarah has been found (see the Research Notes below for details of the search), the first record for her is as a twenty year old in the 1841 census when she was living in Elm, Cambridgeshire with Samuel and Elizabeth Lefever.^[1] The 1841 census did not record relationships, so this alone cannot make the connection. However, later that year she married John Setherell at Elm; he was 25, she was 20, and Samuel was listed as her father.^[2] The name Setherell is problematic, as multiple variations were used during Sarah's life. The GRO Marriage Index also has Setherell^[3], it appears to be the name in the Bishop's Transcript, although it has been indexed as Settawell.^[4]

John may appear on the same page of the 1841 census, a few lines down. If so he was not born in Cambridgeshire. It seems clear that they moved to the Holbeach area of Lincolnshire and had a son John born there in 1849^[5], although the surname is listed as Sutherland and the mother's maiden name as Lefeore. At the 1861 census Sarah Ann Southwell, a widow, and her sons John, aged 12 born in Holbeach, and James, aged 6 born in Wisbech, were living in Wisbech in the same household as Samuel and his family. Both family groups were lodgers, so the family relationship is inferred. James' birth was registered as Southwell, but with no mother's maiden name.^[6] No obvious record for her husband's death has been found.

Sarah Ann's death was registered as Sutherell in 1891.^[7]

Research Notes

A search on freereg.org.uk, familysearch.org, Ancestry.com and findmypast.co.uk has turned up no results. The baptisms of her brothers William in 1817 and John in 1822 show up in the transcriptions of the St Peter, Wisbech parish records^[8], but a manual search of the Bishop's Transcripts from 1819 to 1821^[9] was unsuccessful.
