Ira DeWitt Lefever

Ira DeWitt Lefever was the son of Oliver A. Lefever and Eliza J. (Coutant) Lefever of Rosendale, NY.[1]; he was ae 3 in 1870(10Aug)[2]His father, Oliver A. Lefever, died in 1872 in a powder mill explosion when Ira was abt 5y (ref Oliver Ackerman Lefever). In 1880(7Jun), Ira D and sister Rosina were staying with maternal grandparents, Jacob and Cornelia Coutant, in Rosendale, four homes away from paternal grandparent Samuel S. Lefever household. Mother and sister Carrie are not recorded in either household census.[3]While Carrie reappears in 1900 census, Ira's mother died in 1881, leaving Ira to be raised primarily by his Coutant relatives.

Ira married Ada Proper 18 September 1888 in Rosendale, Ulster, New York.[4] Established a home in Esopus NY, censused in 1900 with 2 surviving children, Elsie and Ruth.[5] In 1902, the couple owned a home in Tillson which they had rented to Albert Post, a probable relation to Ira's maternal aunt, Amanda (Coutant) Post.[6]

Living in Oyster Bay NY by 1910 with wife and 3 daughters, Ada was born to the family in 1904. The family remained in Oyster Bay for several years.[7][8] In 1918, Ira's wife and daughter, Ada, visited the Union Center home of Ira's uncle, Simon Coutant, accompanied by an aunt, Mrs. Norman Coutant.[9]

In 1920, Ira was staying with dau. Elsie and her husband W. Allen Flower on Bridge Street in Oyster Bay.[10] Occupation: Contractor/bricklayer. He and his wife still maintained their Oyster Bay residence, as evidenced by social news mentioning various visits in the early 1920s. One such visit mentions Miss Beatrice Proper, a local relative of Ira's wife, Ada. In 1922, after visiting relatives in Port Ewen, Ira and his wife, along with dau, Ada, returned to Brooklyn, accompanied by America Lefever, the 2nd wife of Ira's great-uncle, Aaron.[11]

In 1930, his wife and he were living with youngest dau. Ada and her husband Thomas Dreibholz, incl. grandchild, JoAn (ae 6 mos), in Queens NY. [12]; but, by 1935, they had established their own apartment at 3fl 16026 Highland Ave in Queens NY, where they still resided in 1940.[13]

At some point after 1940, Ira apparently moved to Islip.

Ira died in Islip, Suffolk, New York on 10 Oct 1954. He was 87.[14]

While many family members were buried in Rosendale Plains Cemetery and in Port Ewen, no death or gravesite record for either Ira or wife Ada have been located.
