Research Notes

Civil birth registration was introduced during Edward's lifetime and many of his children have a last name on registration of Lefever. It appears that Edward and his wives were unable to write though, and this may help explain why the family name with which he appears in census records (e.g. in 1841) is different to the family name under which his children were registered. I have not yet located any birth or baptism record for Edward yet, so we don't have a reliable source for his own last name at birth.

According to Roy Montgomery of the Hampshire Genealogical Society in an email to James Youngman,

According to our Baptism Index the only baptisms to Lefevre children around 1800 are in Heckfield and Southampton (with spelling variations) , but there is not an Edward among them. The only slight remote hope is that there are two baptisms to a Henry Francis Lefevre in 1800 and 1802, and with no burial for the 1800 child there is a remote possibility that the second baptism in 1802 had mistakenly duplicated the first name. Unfortunately If this did happen then there is no way of knowing what the second name would have been without looking at the fiche copies of the actual register.

Even with using wildcards for spelling variations the first baptism that we have of a Lefevre in Portsmouth is in 1841 to a boy named James whose parents were James and Matilda. I agree with what the census records say but unfortunately nothing that we have here supports that claim. I’ve even checked the non-conformist registers but they do not have the name either.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Edward by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Edward:
