Biography

From family Bible records, [1] Rebecca Leftwich married Charles Moorman (son of Thomas Moorman) on 30 Nov 1769. She died 7 June 1774.

Rebecca and Charles had the following children: [1]

  1. William Moorman, b. 10 Feb 1772.
  2. James Moorman, b. 1 Feb 1774.

James Moorman is named as Grandson in Augustine Leftwich Senr's will. Of note, bond is posted for Augustine Leftwich Sr dec'd: "Whereupon they together with Christopher Clark & Charles Moorman their securities entered into & Acknowledged their bond in the Penalty of Five Thousand Pounds Conditioned for the true & faithful administration of the said Decedents Estate and performance of his will." Christopher (aka Kit) Clark and the Moorman family were Quakers. While she is not named in her father's will, she died prior to his death.

Bedford County Virginia, Will Book 2, pp 156,157. “In the name of God, Amen. I Augustine Leftwich Senr., of the county of Bedford and State of Virginia being weak old & infirm but in perfect senses and memory of mind, and Considering the uncertainty of this Transitory Life, knowing that it is allotted for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in the form and manner following, to- wit, first I commend my soul to God who gave it. Item, I give & bequeath to my Grand Daughter Nancy Leftwich daughter of Jabez Leftwich, my negro girl named (big) Fan to her and her heirs forever. Item, I lend to my beloved wife Elizabeth Leftwich as much of my Estate as will make her life easy and Comfortable till her Decease the sufficiency of which to be adjudged of by my Executors hereafter named and after the decease of my wife that part of my Estate reserved for her to be Equally divided among my Children hereafter named in the same manner that the residue of my Estate is to be Divided amongst them. Viz. I give & bequeath to my sons William Leftwich Thomas Leftwich Augustine Leftwich Uriah Leftwich John Leftwich Littleberry Leftwich Joel Leftwich Jabez Leftwich & my Daughters Fanny Carter, Mary Early, and Nancy Pettross, all that part of my Estate both Real & Personal which will not be reserved by my Executors for the use of my wife during her natural Life to them & their heirs forever, share & share alike. To be Laid off in Lots as Equally as Possible and drawn for by the Legatees. Reserving to my Grand___ Grandson son James Moorman a Tract of Land which I formerly gave him and a Negro Girl Viney. I do hereby Constitute and appoint my beloved wife Elizabeth Leftwich my Executrix my son Thomas Leftwich & my friend David Saunders my whole & sole Executors to Carry this my Last Will & Testament into Effect. In Witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand & affix my Seal this tenth day of June in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred & Ninety-four __ __ __ Provided Nevertheless that if my Grand Daughter, Nancy Leftwich within Named should Depart this life without an heir Lawfully begotten of her body that the within Named (big) Fann & her increase shall revert to my Children to be divided amongst them in the same manner that the rest of my Estate is Divided.__________ Signed Sealed and acknowledged the date as above written in presence of John Trigg. Peyton Leftwich. Benjamin Estes. Augustine A (his mark) Leftwich L (his seal). At a Court held for Bedford County the 22d. day of June 1795. _______ This Last Will & Testament of Augustine Leftwich Deceased was _____ proved by the oath of John Trigg & Peyton Leftwich witnesses whose names are thereunto subscribed and Ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Thos Leftwich & David Saunders two of the Executors therein named who made Oath thereto Certificate is Granted them for obtaining probate thereof on Giving Security. Whereupon they together with Christopher Clark & Charles Moorman their securities entered into & Acknowledged their bond in the Penalty of Five Thousand Pounds Conditioned for the true & faithful administration of the said Decedents Estate and performance of his will. Liberty being reserved the executrix therein named to join in the probate when she shall think fit. Teste: Ja Steptoe, C.B.C.________
