Biography

Rutha Rosanna Leftwich was born 30 November 1854 in Troup County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Joel Leftwich and his wife Jane Wise, the third of their five children, named for two of her mother's sisters - Rutha and Rosanna. She was called Rosie. About 1857 or 1858 they and several allied families moved to Cass County, Texas. There are family stories of 30 wagons; men, women and children; household goods and livestock walking across Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana to make a new home. Jane Wise Leftwich died in childbirth during the War Between the States and Joel married in 1864 Sarah Ann Knight. Rosie was 10 years old with brothers 16 and 13, sisters 7 and 5. In January 1871 Joel died at age 48 leaving two sets of children. Stepmother Sarah was awarded guardianship of her three children ages 2, 5 and 6. Rosie's brother J. H. had died in 1865 at age 14 and her brother William Riley was 23 and on his own. That left Rosie, age 17, and Sarah and Texanna, 14 and 12. On 2 February 1871 Rosie married William Lewis Beauchamp who was 22, and they became guardians of the two younger sisters. By 1880 Rosie and her family, along with other Beauchamps, had moved to Grayson County, Texas. Between 1871 and 1897 twelve children were born, eight of whom lived to adulthood - one son and seven daughters. Sometime before 1900 Rosie and W. L. moved to the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory to a small town called Roff where he farmed and owned a hardware store and undertaking business. In the 1920 census Rosie was living in Fitzhugh, Oklahoma with her daughter Betty, her husband having died the previous year. She herself died in 1923 at the home of her daughter Alma Beauchamp Lewis in Electra, Texas. She and her husband are buried in Collinsville, Texas. Rosie was remembered by her granddaughter Rosa Lee Bunyard Strong (who was named after her) as a petite woman, very sweet, who loved having her grandchildren come spend the night for one-on-one time.
