Steward Woodward Leftwich was born on January 30, 1921 in Edmonton, Metcalfe County, Kentucky, United States, son of John Tribue Leftwich (1891–1964) and Vera Kinnaird (1892–1981).
Steward married Iris Eileen Reynolds (born on December 21, 1922 in Knob Lick, Metcalfe; daughter of LeRoy Reynolds and Zora Thompson).

Steward died on February 27, 2006 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, aged 85. He is commemorated at Louisville Memorial Gardens West, Shively, Jefferson County, Kentucky.[3]
