Francis was born in 1829. He was the son of George Legard and Anne Hawksworth. he was baptised at St Michael le Belfry, York, Yorkshire, England on 24 April 1829.[1]

He matriculated at University College, Oxford in 1847, but the 1851 census records him as a scholar at St John's College, Oxford.[2]

He was Vicar of Whitwell, Yorkshire from 1858 to 1873, and is recorded there in the 1871 census.[3] From 1873 to his death ion 1883 he was Rector of Stokesley, Yorkshire, where he is listed in the 1881 census as a widower.[4] His death was registered in the Scarborough district of Yorkshire in the fourth quarter of 1883.[5] He was buried on 24 November 1883 at Stokesley, Yorkshire.[6]
