Biography

William Henry was born on the 20th of January 1817 in the parish of St George Hanover Square, London, England. He was baptised on the 1st of March 1817 at St George Hanover Square, London [1]. His surname was Leggat on the baptism register and his parents were John and Sarah and lived at Steels Court and it said his father was a Turner. A quick search suggests he may have had 4. siblings - Amelia Elizabeth, 1822. Charles, 1824. Henrietta, 1815 and Eleanor, 1809.

On the 1841 census, William has been transcribed as Willm Leggett born in 1820, the page is quite difficult to read, but William has the occupation of Upholsterer here to, making me believe its the same person. He is living on Park Street, St Marylebone and appears to be living in a house of multiple occupancy. [2]

William married Jane Binden on the 18th of July 1841 at St George Hanover Square, London, England. The witnesses were John Legate and James Thomas Smith [3]. This certificate confirms William was the son of John Legate a Turner and he lived on Grosvenor Street.

I have been unable to find this couple on the 1851 census {checked 3rd Jan 2016}

In the 1861 census, William is shown living with his wife Jane at 34 Great Castle Street, Marylebone, his occupation is upholsterer, and shows them both born at St George Hanover Square. [4]

William died on the 19th of January 1865 at Marylebone, London, England. [5] His death certificate describes his occupation as Cabinet Maker, Journeyman and states his death was caused by Empyema consequent on pleuro pneumonia. The death signatory was Caroline Bales of 34 Great Castle Street, Marylebone.
