Only seven years old and an orphan, in 1765 he followed his two older sisters to Louisiana, where they settled at Cabanocé/St.-Jacques on the river. Spanish officials counted him on the left, or east, bank of the river at St.-Jacques in 1777; he was an engagé, or hired worker, with the family of fellow Acadian Paul Martin.
