Biography

Henry was born on 4 November 1852. He was the son of William Legge 5th Earl of Dartmouth and Lady Augusta Finch.

UK Census Date 1861: Living with his parents, four siblings, two governesses and various aunts and uncles in Patshull, Shropshire, England. Aged 8.

He was educated at Eton College.

Henry married Amy Lambart (daughter of Gustavus William Lambart and Lady Frances Caroline Maria Conyngham) on 25 October 1884 at St. George Hanover Square, London, England.

They had the following children;

Victoria Alexandrina Stella Legge (b. 31 Jul 1885, d. 22 Apr 1965)
Lieutenant Nigel Walter Legge-Bourke (b. 13 Nov 1889, d. 30 Oct 1914)

He gained the rank of Brevet Major in 1885. Henry fought in the Suakin Campaign in 1885, where he was mentioned in despatches.

His father passed away in 1891.

He retired from the Army in 1899. He held the office of Groom-in-Waiting to HM Queen Victoria between 1889 and 1893 and he held the office of Equerry-in-Waiting to HM Queen Victoria between 1893 and 1901. He held the office of Equerry-in-Waiting to HM King Edward VII between 1901 and 1910.

Henry was Registrar and Secretary of the Order of Merit in 1907. He was awarded the Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus of Italy.

He gained the rank of Colonel in the Coldstream Guards.

He held the office of Equerry-in-Waiting to HM King George V between 1910 and 1915 and he held the office of Extra Equerry-in-Waiting to HM King George V in 1915.

He held the office of Paymaster of the Household between 1915 and 1920.

He was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus of Russia; the Order of the Redeemer of Greece; the Order of Isabella of Spain; was appointed appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in 1910 and was promoted to Knight Grand Cross (GCVO) in the 1920 Birthday Honours.

He was awarded the Order of Jesus Christ of Portugal.

UK Census Date 1911: Living in Falmer, Fulmer Slough, Buckinghamshire, England. Also in the household was his son Nigel and 7 servants.

Occupation: COLONEL RETIRED EQUERY TO THE KING

He died on 20 June 1924 at age 71.[1]
