Hon. Edward Legge (1770-1747) was the son of William Legge 1st Earl of Dartmouth and his wife, Anne Finch.
In 1747 Edward Legge’s brother Henry wrote to his patron, the Duke of Beford, who as 1st lord of the Admiralty had recently appointed Edward to the command of a squadron in the West Indies, and now was proposing to bring him into Parliament on the Admiralty interest at Portsmouth:
The least return the Legges can make for the many instances of partiality they have received from your Grace, is to do all in their power to make the effects of that favour as little troublesome to their benefactor as possible; and for my own part I can see no objection to the declaring Ned a candidate for Portsmouth since your Grace is so kind as to see none to accepting of him in that light yourself.1
Edward was duly returned on 15 Dec. but a few days later news arrived from the West Indies that he had died on 19 Sept 1747.
