Obituary

SIMMONS Ruby Estella (nee Legge)

Devoted wife and mother, committed Christian and proud Salvationist. Ruby lived a long and vibrant life and passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2020. Ruby was born in Change Islands, NL on June 17, 1931, the middle child of three girls. She spent most of her childhood growing up in various communities around the province with her Salvation Army Officer parents. Ruby often spoke of her fond memories of Garnish, Hare Bay, Deer Lake and other places. Her sweet and shy personality attracted the outgoing Scott and they spent 63 years married, until his passing in 2018.

Many are left to mourn her passing: 5 children - Bruce, June Trickey (Henry), Keith (Darlene), Bonnie (Derrick), Wayne (Nadia); 12 grandchildren - David, Stephanie (Blake), Jennifer (Owen), Janice, Jonathan, Sharleen (Chad), Stephen (Michelin), Sarah (Sean), Kurtis (Celeste), Matthew, Christopher (Emma), Amy (Kevin); 9 great-grandchildren - Anna, Cate, Eva, Felicity, Lillie, Bella, Klara, Ella, Avery; sisters - Fern Lutz (Ed) and Audrey Howse (Domino); many other relatives and a large circle of friends. Ruby was predeceased by her husband Scott, and parents, Brigadiers Wilson and Eva Legge.

Ruby and Scott loved each other very much and shared a wonderful life together, raising their children in a Christian home, supporting the church, working hard, enjoying life and travelling the world.

After finishing high school, Ruby completed her teaching certificate and began teaching in Windsor, Newfoundland, where she met Scott. Once married they moved to Corner Brook and began their family. Ruby took great pride in caring for her family and supporting them through school and all their endeavours. She also enjoyed being involved with the Salvation Army groups especially Home League and Brownies. Ruby’s Christian beliefs and spiritual growth were very important to her and she began a weekly neighbourhood bible study, which has continued for over 50 years. In later years, Ruby reignited her creative side and began painting and drawing; much of her artwork is spread throughout the country in family member’s homes. During their many winters in Florida, Ruby and Scott enjoyed spending time together golfing; Ruby took great pride in perfecting her skill and loved to spend time with family and friends on the golf course.

The family would like to thank those who provided care to Ruby in recent years: Dr. Robert Young, the staff of 2 South Long Term Care, Corner Brook and other employees from the various health care facilities and organizations.

Visitation will take place at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Mark’s Avenue, Corner Brook – Wednesday, February 19, 2020, 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at the Salvation Army Temple, O’Connell Drive, Corner Brook, 2:00 pm Thursday, February 20, 2020. To continue Ruby’s commitment of caring and giving, donations may be made to the Corner Brook Salvation Army Family Services. The family guestbook may be signed by visiting www.fillatre.ca.
