Biography

Mary was the only child of The Honorable Heneage Legge.

I have not located a birth or baptism record for her, but her birth year is given as follows on the following records:

1841 England Census: 1826 1851 England Census: 1823 1861 England Census: 1825 Burial Record: 1826

Her father married Mary Gregory in 1827. The marriage record states that he was a bachelor. This would imply that the Mary of this profile was born out of wedlock.

It is not entirely clear if her mother was Mary Gregory (see her parents profiles regarding research on her mother’s maiden name, which Burke’s Peerage claims to be Johnstone)

In 1841 she was living with her parents in Richmond, Surrey.

In 1846 she married Frederick William Mackenzie M.D.

The newspaper notice reads: “On the 31st Ultimo, at St James’ Church, Paddington, London, by the Hon. and Rev. Henry Legge, F.W. Mackenzie Esq. M.D., Fellow of University College, of Chester place, Hyde Park Square, London, to Mary, only child of the late Hon. Heneage Legge of Stawell House, Richmond.”

Incidentally, Frederick William Mackenzie also appears to have been born out of wedlock, the child of HM Army Captain William Garrick Bridges Schaw and a young woman, Mary Mckenzie, in New South Wales.

They had a son:

In 1851 and 1861 they were living at 11 Chester Place, Kensington.

She died in 1864. Her residence is given as 11 Chester Place Hyde Park on her burial record, and her age is given as 38.
