In her 30s Ethel taught English at John Harris High School in Harrisburg. In 1932-1933 she exchanged teaching positions with an overseas teacher and taught school in England.[5][6][7]
In 1935, Ethel married Samuel Howard Rolston, Jr. in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
