Biography

England flag
Frederick Leigh was born in England.

Frederick was born about 1818 in St Faith's parish, Winchester, Hampshire, and christened 18 Feb 1818. He was the son of Leonard & Eliza Leigh, and had a brother Robert two years older than him, and a sister Leonora two years younger. He grew up to be an attorney & solicitor.

Frederick married Sarah Bearham on 17 Mar 1845 at Saint Bartholomew Hyde, Winchester, Southampton. Both were of full age.[1]

Frederick died in the first quarter of 1886 in Southampton, aged 68.[2]

Research Notes

1841 census

Frederick's age is reported absolutely consistently in the censuses from 1851 to 1881. There are three Frederick Leighs in Hampshire of approximately the right age to be him in the 1841 census index on FamilySearch - exactly one of these is exactly the right age to match the 1851 - 1881 census entries, and this Frederick is also is the only one of the three candidates to be living in St Faith's Winchester, which is where he stated in the 1851 & 1881 censuses that he was born (one of them uses Winton which is an older name for Winchester). Unfortunately the 1841 census index on FamilySearch doesn't list occupations, and it would be good to verify that his occupation as listed there matches his known occupation of solicitor. The 1841 entry also names a Leonora Leigh, probably his younger sister, which is another minor piece of circumstantial evidence in favour of this entry being the correct one, since Frederick's oldest daughter (in the 1851 census) was called Leonora.

There were two young women with surnames other than Leigh in the household in 1841, as listed in the FamilySearch index. Their 1841 index is not 100% reliable on grouping households correctly, but assuming it's right this time, these could be relatives but as the family was probably rich enough to afford servants if their son was a solicitor, it's more likely they were servants.
