Edmund was born on the 21st September 1852 in Clerkenwell, Middlesex the son of Charles Blair Leighton and Caroline (Boosey) Leighton.[1][2]
His father Charles died when he was three, in 1855.
1861 Census on the 7th April 1861 Edmund was living at 27 Notting Hill Square, Kensington, Middlesex with his widowed mother Caroline, and his siblings Fanny and Helen. They were staying at Caroline's widowed father Thomas Boosey's home. Also living there were Caroline's siblings Harriet, Charlotte, Emily and John, and John's wife Rose. Thomas' sister Mary Boosey and another child Sophia, the daughter of Caroline's brother Charles were also there.[3]
1871 Census on the 2nd April 1871 Edmund a merchant's clerk, was living with his mother Caroline who had a small school with five pupils at 38 Lansdowne Crescent, Chelsea, Middlesex. Also living there were his siblings Fanny and Helen. Caroline's nieces Elizabeth Boosey and Constance Boosey were also living there.[4]
1881 Census on the 3rd April 1881 Edmund an artist painter, was living at 20 Queen Annes Grove, Acton, Middlesex with his mother Caroline and his siblings Fanny and Helen shown as Ellen. Caroline's sister Harriet Boosey was also living there.[5]
Edmund, of 20 Queen Annes Grove, Acton, Middlesex, married Katherine Nash, of 5 Bath Road, Chiswick, Middlesex, on the 5th May 1885 at St Michael & All Angels Church, Chiswick, Middlesex. Her father William Nash was a silk agent. The witnesses were W. H. Nash and James Leonard Holt Papworth.[6]
1891 Census on the 5th April 1891 Edmund an artist and figure painter, was living at 3 Marine Terrace, Marine Parade, Lyme Regis, Dorset with his wife Katherine, and their son Eric. His mother Caroline was also living there.[7]
Edmund was named in the will of his uncle John Boosey in 1894: MUSIC PUBLISHER'S WILL. Mr John Boosey, musical publisher and founder of the St James's Hall ballad concerts, has left personalty exceeding £74,000. Testator, who died at his residence at Ealing on January 13. appointed his wife, to whom he gives a life interest in the bulk of his estate, and Messrs Andrew I Stephens, W. H. Vandry, and Edward Blair Leighton, the last of whom is constituted ultimate residuary legatee, his executors. Testator leaves £72 year to his brother, Edward Cunningham Boosey, and numerous legacies to friends and relations.[8]
1901 Census on the 31st March 1901 Edmund an artist and painter in oils, was living at 2 Priory Road, Chiswick, Middlesex with his wife Katherine, and their son Eric.[9]
1911 Census on the 2nd April 1911 Edmund an artist painter, was living at 2 Priory Road, Chiswick, Middlesex with his wife Katherine, and their children Eric and Sophie.[10]
Edmund, of 2 Priory Road, Chiswick, Middlesex, died aged 69 on the 1st September 1922 and was buried in Old Chiswick Cemetery, London Borough of Hounslow, Greater London, England.[11]
Probate of Edmund's estate, £33461 6s. 0d., was processed in London on the 11th October 1922 and passed to Kathleen Leighton his widow, and to James Leonard Holt Papworth a merchant, George Paris Sandeman a solicitor, and to Edmund's son Eric John Blair Leighton an artist.[12]
