Note: Edna related to me that she and Forrest went to live with Howard and his wife and their son, when their eldest was a baby. They lived there for almost a year, before they left because Forrest either had a fight with Howard or wouldn't forgive Howard for something. Howard and family lived on a farm in South Princeton at the time. Forrest refused further contact with Howard afterwards, so Edna knew no more about that side. She did say that when Forrest was in his early teens, his mother put a paper or set of papers in front of him keeping covered most of the content and tried to make him sign it. He refused and took the papers away from her. It was an adoption contract. Up until that moment, Forrest had thought that his mother's husband - Leroy Kinney was his father. He questioned his mother until she told him that Howard Leighton was his natural father, and that he was illegitimate. The papers that he was to sign was to allow Leroy Kinney to adopt Forrest legally.
