James Leighton was born around 1842 in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Ireland. He married Rebecca Crawford on 12 Dec 1863 in Coleraine, Ireland. His father was listed as Jacob Leighton and her father was listed as John Crawford on the marriage record. Witnesses were George Coldwell and Eliza Crawford.[1][2]

James Leighton was the son of Jacob Leighton, a carter, and Margaret Morton. He was born about 1841. [15]

He married Rebecca Crawford at Coleraine, County Coleraine, on 12 December 1863. [16]. His second marriage was to Martha Edmiston. [15]

James died on 30 September 1891 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, aged 50. His brother-in-law, Thomas Edmiston, was the informer of the information on the death certificate. [15]

Oh great! That makes sense. 'Full' means 21 or over. I'll amend the birth date on this profile and also the father Jacob, as he needs merging too.

Leighton-890 and Leighton-597 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same spouses, same children. Birth year is 1851 based on the his age on the Scotland Census.

Thanks Susan for proposing this merge. There is a copy of the death certificate uploaded to Ancestry, and the death certificate states that he was 50 when he died in 1891, so possibly the 1891 census record may not be correct. I've added the details of the death certificate to James Leighton (abt.1841-1891). I'll see if I can find any other sources.

1841 is probably closer to being correct. He was married the first time in 1863 - 1851 means he would have been 12 at the time (I missed that). Neither of his marriage records list his actual age - just state Full.
