Biography

George was born in 1828. He is the son of Charles Leiper and Elizabeth Irvine. He did not accompany his mother and two sisters to Austalia when they emigrated in 1848. Although Leiper appears to be the family name used on his birth certificate, later documentation such as Census, Army pension records and birth records of his children give his family a Lapier.

George served in the British army for over 21 years, being discharged at completion of service in 1869. He served over nine years as a private, a year and a half as corporal, and about 10 and a half years sergeant. He served overseas in Cape of Good Hope for 14 years (where one of his children was born. His pension record on discharge indicates that he was of very good character (4 badges) and that he had been born in "Kilbarten, Paisley, Renfrew". His trade, presumably at time of entry to the army, was cotton spinner.

George married Matilda Jane Brown in the Channel Islands in 1860. Their daughter Annie was born in 1866 in Cape of Good Hope, and their daughter Matilda Jane was born there in 1868. Their son George Augustus Charles was born in Scotland in 1871.

In 1871, the Census shows George and Matilda living in Montrose, Scotland. There are three children (mentioned above) in the household, as well as a nephew, Charles Matthews, age 9, born in Ireland.

By 1881 they have moved to Southampton St. Mary, Hampshire, England. George is described as licensed victualler. Their three children are still living with them.

In 1891 George is a widower, living in Southampton. He is described as an army pensioner. His three children still are living with him.
