Biography

John Leitch was born in 1806. His baptism was recorded at Coldstream, Berwickshire on 19 May 1806 but the record says he was born at Jedburgh, Roxburghshire nearly a month earlier, on 25 Apr 1806.

He married Helen Clazy in 1833 at Eccles, Berwickshire. Banns published before the wedding showed alternate spelling of both surnames:

26/04/1833 CLEZY HELEN JOHN LEACH/FR623 F ECCLES /BERWICK 737/00 0030 0091

The couple later had sons in 1836 and 1838, both named in accordance with the Scottish naming tradition: Richard, "first son after father's father", and George, "second son after mother's father". Helen died in 1839.

John Leitch remarried in 1848 to Isabella Robertson but the marriage record shows her name as "Isabel Robson". They were shown together in the 1851 census at Eccles.

In 1863 John and Isabella emigrated to Australia on the ship "Star of London", departing from London in May 1863 and arriving in Brisbane in September 1863. They were accompanied by their five children; the sixth and youngest, John, presumably was born after their arrival.

Records show that John Leitch entered New Zealand on 8 Nov 1874 at Nelson, on the ship "Ocean Mail" and again on 24 Jan 1877 at Canterbury, on the ship "Waipa". In both cases he was described as a farm labourer; each time he returned to Queensland.

John Leitch died at South Pine, Coboolture District, Queensland in 1884 and was buried at Lutwyche Cemetery, along with various other members of the Leitch family.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
