Biography

Jacob Lemley, born in Mittelschöntal, Württemberg (later part of Germany) in 1825,[1][2] came to the United States as a young man around 1848, during a time of political upheaval in Europe, brought on by a series of bad harvests, recession, and high unemployment. It seems likely that our Jacob was seeking economic opportunity more than political freedom. He settled in Warren, Ohio, as did his sisters Caroline and Fredrika and his brother Götlieb. Jacob made his living as a cooper and drayman.

Jacob married Margarete Herlinger, another German immigrant, and they had six children[3], several of whom were born in Iowa. The family moved by covered wagon between Warren, Ohio and their Iowa homestead as Jacob sought a living.

The Lemleys were warm and happy people according to a granddaughter’s memories,[4] in spite of what must have been a hard life by today's standards, both in a poor area of Warren, Ohio and out on the Iowa prairie.

By 1860 the family appears to have settled in Warren for the long run.[5] [6] Jacob died there in 1881[7] and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery as are many of his relatives.[8]
