Biography

John Lemmon, Sr. was born November 6, 1740, in Baltimore county, Maryland. He died April 13, 1811 in Georgetown, District of Columbia at age 76.

Military

Soldier John Lemmon Sr. served with Upper Battalion, Baltimore County Militia, Maryland Militia during the American Revolution.

John Lemmon Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A069547.

During the American Revolutionary War, John enlisted as a Private in the Baltimore Artillery Company, Captain Henry Sheaff, commanding. ^[1] John also served as a marine when Captain George Cook took command of the ship Defense, late in 1776, and sailed to the West Indies. Shortly after returning from this cruise, Captain Cook, with about 60 or 70 of his crew, left Baltimore on the night of December 17, headed to Philadelphia. ^[2]

John signed the Oath of allegiance. He is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for his military service and his Patriotism. DAR records indicate that he died after April 13, 1811, in Baltimore county, Maryland and that his wife's name was Sarah Stansbury. Applications for membership in the Society have been made by the descendants of their sons, John Lemmon, who married Millison Foster; Benjamin Lemmon, who married Rebecca Cockey; and of their daughter, Martha Lemmon, who married Joshua Price. ^[3]

John Lemmon is found on the First Census of the United States, taken in 1790, living on the "Patapsco Lower Hundred" in Baltimore county, Maryland. ^[4]

Clifford Daniel Lemmon, in hisapplication for Hoosier Founders (Public Library, Corydon Indiana), givesdeath date as April 1811. Sources are given as DAR Patriot Index;"Marines in the Revolution," by Charles R. Smith; Baltimore Will Book 9ff 116-115, Will John Lemmon.

DAR Lineage Book states that John Lemmon served as a private on the ship "Defense," George Cook commanding, during the Revolutionary War. "Revolutionary Patriots of Baltimore Town and Baltimore County Maryland1775-1783," Henry C. Peden, Jr. Family Line Publications, Silver Spring,Maryland, 1988, page 150, states that John served in the Baltimore Artillery Company in October 1775, and also as a Marine Private on theship "Defence," 1777.

The November-December 1995 issue of "Archaeology" Magazine, page 21states that the brig "Defence" from the Penobscot Expedition was located in 1972 and that its remains and artifacts are now at the Maine StateMuseum in Augusta.

"Revolutionary War Soldiers- -Harrison County, Indiana," by Orville L.Funk, 1975, page 23, gives John's birthplace as Ireland, and his Revolutionary service as Artillery, Province of Maryland, Gen. GeorgeRogers Clark Command. His date of death is given as March 31, 1811 ratherthan March 13, 1811. His proof off service is given as Clark's Land Grantroster.

Ken Lemmon, in a June 30, 1997 e-mail transmission, states that John also served as a private in LT. Richard Clarks Co. in the Illinois Regiment,enlisting September 9, 1779 to March 29, 1784. He took the Oath of Fidelity and support of the state of Maryland in Frederick County in1778.
