Biography

James was born about 1834 in Catrine, Ayrshire, according to his wedding record- I have been unable to find his birth record^[1]. His mother was Harriet Sliman and his father was James Lennox. James was the second child in the family.

At the time of the 1841 census, James was recorded as being 9 years old, although this is inconsistent with his age or date of birth given on other documents throughout his life, which would make him 8 at most^[2]. He is living with family in Mill Street, Catrine. His father is working as a shoemaker and his older brother Alexander is recorded as an apprentice shoemaker. James has three younger sisters by this time: Jane, aged 5, Mary aged 3 and Susanna, who is only 3 months old.
