Centerville, PA – David Dee Leonard Mock, 68, of Centerville, PA, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long courageous battle against cancer.
Born August 24, 1948, in Greensboro, NC, David was the son of the late Lester Dee. Leonard and Lillian Irene (Campbell) Davis. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter: Katheryn Grace Bornost; and his sister: Debi (Elliot) Edwards.
David was a 1966 graduate of Bedford High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy Seabees and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. David retired from the Navy in 1981. Following his military retirement, David drove truck all over the United States and Canada while employed by Bayliner Boats. It was while working for Bayliner that he was given the name “Grumpy” by co-workers. That name he was called regularly by his friends throughout the years. Grumpy and Grump he proudly responded to yet he fooled no one. Family and friends knew he had a soft side and deep compassion. Still, David was strong, a hard and dedicated worker, and was a very adept political provocateur who delighted engaging family, friends, some unwillingly, in political debates. David was an avid outdoorsman. He hunted and his favorite pastime was fishing. David had great mechanical abilities. He could fix anything that was broken. He also was able to build beautiful pieces of furniture. There was nothing that he could not master. One of his proudest life accomplishments was becoming an EMT and joining the team/family at the Cumberland Valley Township Volunteer Fire Department. David was an avid reader. He read any book on any subject, of any size. David always wanted to learn more. While he traveled the United States, David loved the community of Centerville, Cumberland Valley. There was nowhere else he wanted to live.
As an adult, with the help of his ex-wife, Janet Weatherholt Grams, Dave became reunited with his biological Leonard family in North Carolina. The family in Greensboro loved him, cherished him, and he considered them one of his biggest blessings.
David is survived by his current wife of 12 years: Jill Anne (Alderton) Lowe Shroyer; two ex -wives that he remained close friends with, Janet Weatherholt Grams and Donna Jean Riggleman Cox, and his children: Lesa Lynn (Grams) Bornost and husband, Richard; Travis Tyler Grams and his wife, Vanessa; an adopted daughter Christy Lynn Calhoun and husband, Dean; and a son Justin David Mock and wife, Tamara. He is also survived by his brother: Johnny William Davis; his sisters: Patricia Ann Stump; Ginny Lee Simon; and Connie Lynn Davis; and his stepson: Christopher Britton Lowe. David has three grandchildren: David Tyler Grams; Tessa Elizabeth Grams; and Emma Grace Bornost.
