Just Mahlon, and newborn (age 0) on the 1850 census. Mahlon J (?) on the 1860 census. Mahlon D. on the 1870 census. Two Mahlon Leonards in Martin County on the 1880 census. One - Mahlon D. - was about 30 years old, in Lost River Township with Catherine J., age 20, and Mary, age 7. The other - just Mahlon - was about 28, in Columbia Township with Catherine, age 24, and Lucy, age 3. The Lost River Mahlon's father was reported to be born in North Carolina, the other Mahlon's father in Indiana. (Both mothers born in Indiana.) No Mahlon found in the region on the 1900 census, and Catherine was listed as widowed on that census. Believe the same Mahlon was counted twice in 1880.
