Biography

Raymond was born in Union County, Indiana in 1896 and passed away in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1965.[1][2] [3]

Military Service

Raymond's service record can be viewed here: Navy Service Record for Raymond James Leonard. He served aboard the USS Stewart in World War I.[4] He fired coal into the boiler on the ship.[5] The ship was a supplier to other destroyers.[5] Raymond would tell the story of passing the convoy carrying President Woodrow Wilson to Europe.[5] This event is covered in the Wikipedia article about the USS Stewart and its service: "USS_Stewart_(DD-13)".

Furlough Visit Home

Raymond was home on a fourteen-day furlough from his service in the US Navy in January 1919, as reported in the Richmond Palladium-Item.[4]

Marriage

Raymond Leonard and Jennie (Lafuze) Leonard were married at the home of Rev. Mills in Mooresville, Indiana.[6] He had married Jennie's parents, Curtis Lafuze & Margaret Moon while the reverend lived in Union County.[6] He had retired.[6] Jennie wrote him a letter, and he accepted.[6] Berthabel & Eulie Conner and Curtis Lafuze & Margaret Moon attended.[6]
