Biography

This profile is part of the Leonard Name Study.

Phoebe Leonard was the oldest child of George and Anna (Tisdale) Leonard. She was born at Norton, Massachusetts, 11 Mar 1696.[1][2] She was named in her father George's 1716 will.[3]

Mrs (Mistress) Phebe Leonard married 26 Aug 1718 at Norton, Joseph Reynolds of Bristol, Rhode Island,[2] son of Nathaniel Reynolds and Priscilla Bracket.[1] She and Joseph lived in a house now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Joseph Reynolds House, in Bristol, Rhode Island.

Anna and Joseph acknowledged receipts of several items: 28 Aug 1730, a sum of money from her brother Abiel, which he had been obliged to give her from property received of their mother; 10 June 1740, a sum from her brother Nathaniel, which Abiel had left to Phebe in his will; 28 Oct 1744, for money from her brother Ephraim that was from "our father George Leonard Esq."[4]

In 1733, her mother, Anna Thomas, made very specific bequests of items of clothing to her "daughter Phebe (wife of mr Joseph Raynolds of Bristol)" and money that was owed to Anna.[5]

In 1740, Phebe and her husband signed a receipt of her share of the legacy from her brother, Abiel Leonard's estate.[6]

Phebe passed away 18 Dec 1744 at Bristol,[7] as the wife (unnamed) of Joseph Reynolds age 49.[8] Her gravestone can be seen at the Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission website. She was buried at the East Burial Ground, Bristol.
