Samuel was born in 1755 in New Jersey.
The Township Books of Kings County, Nova Scotia states: "Samuel Leonard, Capt. of H. M. [Her Majesties] Royal New Jersey Volunteers and Nancy Allison married 22 Sep 1785. She was born in Ireland and settled in Horton about 17__. Samuel Leonard died 20 Aug 1825, aged 69. Mrs. Leonard died 27 Oct 1858 at J.N. Cranes's in her 91st year."
He wrote his Last Will and Testament on 20 Apr 1821 leaving legacies to his wife Nancy, niece Nancy Shannon, wife of James A. Shannon, Jr., Samuel Leonard Allison, son of Joseph Allison, grand nephew, Samuel Leonard Shannon, son of James Noble Shannon, Jr., George Augustus Allison, son of James Allison, Samuel Leonard Bishop, son of Eleazer Bishop and Samuel Leonard Crossman.
He died 20 Aug 1825.
The 9 Feb 1884 edition of The Daily Sun reported: "The Leonards of New England and New Jersey were of common origin. Among the Loyalists of New Jersey whose property was confiscated were Thomas Leonard, a citizen of Freehold, Monmouth Co., N.J., who is supposed to be the one numbered 1 of the grantees at Parr Town and his sons John Leonard, Joseph Leonard of Shrewsbury and Samuel Leonard of Dover, all of the same county.
