Biography

James was born 31 Oct 1902 [1]and grew up in Hurley, Ulster County, NY. . [2] He is the son of Jennette (Elsworth) Leonard (abt.1863-1928) and James Cunniff (abt.1862-abt.1938) . [3]

James married Irene Booth (1897-1981) He died in 1977 at the age of 75. He and Irene are buried side by side at the Hurley Cemetery. [4]

An undated copy of an obituary posted on the FindAGrave site states, "James Cunniff, 75, of Hurley, area civic leader, died suddenly at Kingston hospital on Wednesday.
"Mr. Cunniff was a retired general contractor. A lifelong Republican, he served as Republican committeeman of District 2, Hurley, and was a member of Hurley Republican Club and the Hurley Senior Citizens Association. He was a past president and member of the Hurley Cemetery board, an organizer and past president of the Hurley Gun Club, a charter member of the Hurley Fire Co., a former deputy sheriff and was presently a member of the Hurley Board Revenue Sharing Committee.
"Born Oct 31, 1902, at Hurley, Mr. Cunniff was a son of the late James & Jeannette Ellsworth Cunniff.
"Surviving are his widow, Irene Booth Cunniff; a son, James A. cunniff of Davenport, Iowa; a sister, Mamie, wife of Chester Keiffer of Hurley, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
"Funeral services will be held at Keyser Funeral Service Kingston Chapel, Albany and Manor Avenues, on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Rev. John Dykstra and the Rev. Charles Stickley will officiate. Burial will be in Hurley Cemetery." [4]
