Research Notes
There are two different James connected to Gilford (FS) as a father, and three different options for Gilford's mother.
James Leonard (KN9P-7R1) and Polly/Mary Woodward (GDHZ-L3T)
James Leonard (KN9P-7R1) and Polly Shaw (GDHZ-SQS)
James Leonard (LLSK-VHN) and Polly Shaw (KH2Y-96S)
There is also another wife listed for KN9P-7R1, Mary Briggs (LWR9-99Q). As Polly can be a nickname for Mary, this may be another possible mother for Gilford? Where I stumble is, considering just the profiles with sources, Polly (KH2Y-96S) died before Gilford was born, yet there are no sources connecting Mary Briggs with Gilford.
There is more on the James Leonard married to Mary Briggs on his Find A Grave profile:[4]
Vermont vital records state that Capt. James Leonard died at ae 59 and was buried at Shaw Cemetery, his wife's name was Mary. Who were James' parents? There are so many James Leonards in that area of Massachusetts at that time. Were his parents Joseph Leonard and Ruth White of Middleborough? Their son James was born May 13th 1772.
Mary's death record lists her parents as Joshua Briggs and Rose with her birthplace as Wareham, Mass. A Mary Briggs was born in Wareham on July 7th 1783, her mother was listed as 'Rosanna' archive.is/CYbRW Her siblings were:

Mary and James Leonard md in Wareham, both were listed as living in the city at that time archive.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
