Biography

John was born in 1770. He was the son of John Lepard. He passed away in 1863.

On July 7, 1806, John Lepard, a yeoman of E. Gwillimbury, made a land petition. He had been in Upper Canada for about 3 years and had a wife and 4 children. He was recommended for 200 acres.

During the War of 1812, John Leppard/Leopard served as a private in the 1st York Militia.

  • From Apr. 17 to 24, 1813, he served in Captain Reuben Richardson’s Company. [1]
  • From Mar. 29 to Apr. 24, 1814, he served on public service at York in Capt. Jeremiah Travis’ Co. [2]
  • From May 8 to 12, 1814, he served in Capt. Travis’ detachment employed on public service at York.[3]
  • From July 8 to 27, 1814, he deserted from Capt. Richardson’s Company.[4]

In a couple of affidavits by John Leppard/Lepard in 1839 & 1847, he said that he came from Sussex, New Jersey, and he mentioned having an uncle Henry Kizer (Kyzer/Kyser). John was in Northumberland Co., PA by 1790.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Added another payroll record from July, 1814. I have now transcribed all the rolls for the 1st York Militia. Also in the regiment were Abraham, Jacob, and Peter Leopard and Peter Kizer/Kuyser (Kaiser-1954).

If you want to know more about life in Upper Canada during the War of 1812, I have a book online at http://warof1812cdnstories.blogspot.ca/

Thanks for the added data, Fred - it is very interesting and adds more depth to his life.
I have added information to this profile as a project manager with the wikitree Upper Canada War of 1812 Project and linked it to the project pages. I am not related to this family.

Please email me, if you have questions about this war and other veterans and their families.

I may add more sourced militia records in the coming months. An Abraham Leopard was serving in the same regiment.
