Biography

Sarah Leppard was born in 1821 in Woodcote, Oxfordshire, England. She Passed away on the 14th April 1894 in John St, Camden, NSW, Australia. Sarah Leppard married Henry Lock on the 28th November 1841 in St. James Church, Bermondsey, England.

Notes for Sarah Leppard:

Pedigree No. 55. Sarah Leppard lived in Richmond St, Bermondsey, Surrey, England on the 20th November 1842 (listed on daughter Sarah's Baptism Certificate). Sarah immigrated to Australia to join her husband Henry in 1850 at age 30. Setting sail on the "Ramillies", she arrived in Sydney on the 11th August 1850, along with, daughter Mary - 7, and son Henry T. - 5. Henry had arrived the previous year in 1849, as a "Convict Exile".

On the shipping list, Sarah's native place is shown as Woodcote, Oxford. On her Death Certificate, it says she was born in Reading, Berkshire, England, and at the far right of the Certificate it says - For Reading, Berkshire, England, read Woodcote, Oxfordshire, England. Below this correction on the Death Certificate it lists the informant as James Hayter, son-in-law, 17th April 1894.

The original informant on the Death Certificate was Henry Lye, son-in-law and it was registered on the 15th April 1894. (We have a copy of this Death Certificate).

Sarah Leppard was 74 when she passed away, and was buried on the 16th April 1894 in the St John's Cemetery, Camden, NSW.

At the time of her death her living children were, Henry T. - 50, Moses - 40, and Sarah - 37. She had 2 daughters and 2 sons deceased. One of the deceased daughters was Mary, wife of James Hayter, and it is proposed that the other is Amy G. who was born in 1858 and died in 1859.

We have found a David Lock, son of Henry and Sarah, who died in 1881, but no Birth Index for him. He may have been one of the deceased sons. She may have also lost a son before coming to Australia.
