His father was a farmer.[2]
In 1910, the family's last name was incorrectly shown as Lerny. Sixteen year old Huey (shown as H Corbet) lived in Eufaula, Barbour, Alabama, United States with his father James (shown as JH, age 46), mother Ida (age 41), and siblings Milton (age 20), Junie (shown as Farris, age 19), Flossie (shown as Flossy, age 14), Willie (age 13), James (shown as Werden, age 11), and Lydia (shown as Lillie, age 8). His father was a farmer and Milton, Junie, and Henry were farm laborers.[3]
Huey lived in Mildand City, Dale, Alabama, United States when he enlisted as a Private in the United States Army June 6, 1917.[4]
Assigned to Company G of the 167th US Infantry in the National Guard, Huey shipped out to Europe from Montreal, PO, Canada November 6, 1917 aboard the Aseania.[5]
He returned as a Corporal July 2, 1919 and was discharged July 19, 1919.[4]
Huey (shown as HC) married Viola Byrd March 6, 1921 in Dale County, Alabama, United States[6]
and they had at least two children (see Notes).
In 1930, Huey (age 36) and Viola (age 34) paid $35 per month rent for their home at 707 South Hull Street in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States. They lived there with children Joseph (shown as Russel J", age 9) and James (shown as Jon Byrd, age 5).[7]
In 1940, Huey (shown as HC, age 46) and Viola (age 44) paid $27.50 per month rent for their home at 318 Capitol Avenue in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States. They lived there with children Joseph (shown as Russell, age 18) and James (shown as Byrd, age 16). Huey was an auto mechanic, Viola was a retail saleslady, and Joseph was an apprentice painter.[8]
Huey died September 26, 1960 in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States and was buried September 28, 1960[9]
in Section 20 of the Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States. A military gravestone is inscribed "ALABAMA, CPL MOTOR TRANSPORT CORPS, WORLD WAR I".[10]
His obituary was published September 27, 1960 in the Alabama Journal.[11]
