Gilbert was two years younger than I was, but being a boy, was about as tall as I was. We were good friends and comrades but he was “the-boss” and we always played his games, and I became a tom-boy. Gilbert was an artist in his ability to carve little farm machinery out of wood. We had hay rakes, plows, disks, harrows and farm wagons all made to scale. He made sleds with movable front runners for every kid the neighborhood. He even screwed steel to the runners to make them slide fast on the hill. Gilbert had rheumatic fever when he was about eleven years old. He was very ill and in so much pain that Dad had to roll him on a sheet to bathe and care for his needs. He appeared to get well but we know now that his heart was damaged in a serious way. When he was 70 he had a heart valve replacement but he lived only five more years. During his adult years he led a productive life as a valued employee of Boeing Aircraft Co. in Renton and Seattle, WA. He also built several rental homes in his spare time. He retired at age 65 on a little ranch outside Chehalis, WA. where he raised appaloosa horses. [8]
