James Leslie, likely born about 1450, was the second son to Sir William Leslie, 4th of Balquhain, and his third wife, Euphemia Lindsay, only child and heiress of William Lindsay of Cairney, second son of David, first Earl of Crawford, by Janet, daughter of King Robert II. It is from her that he acquired the lands of Cairney and thus provided Pitcaple to his sons of her; firstly David, the older brother, and then James.
James inherited the lands and titles when his brother was killed in Edinburgh, 1472.
He died at some time close to 27th October 1506, as this is when his son is served heir.
He married Elizabeth Seton, daughter of the Baron of Meldrum, and had issue:
