The parents of Agnes Leslie are Robert Lessly (Leslie) and Agnes Henderson, who were married on 29 October, 1773, in Forgan, Fife, Scotland. [1] There is another marriage record for Robert Lessly (note spelling difference of last name) marriage to Agnes Henderson on 19 September, 1773, at Cameron, Fife, Scotland. [2] The 19 September, 1773, is preferred because the family is closely associated with Cameron.
Agnes Leslie was born about four years after their marriage as the third of their nine children. Agnes Leslie was christened on 21 September, 1777, at Cameron, Fife, Scotland. [3]
The two siblings born before her, Robert Leslie and Ann Leslie, only appear in the will of their father, Robert Leslie, [4] and do not seem to have a christening record. All of her siblings born after her were born and christened in Cameron, Fife, Scotland. Three of them, Helen, William and James, are not mentioned in their father's will and may have predeceased him.
Cameron, a parish, in the district of St. Andrew's, county of Fife, 4 miles from St. Andrew's. This place, which formerly was included in the parish of St. Andrew's, appears to have derived its name from the lands on part of which the church was erected on its separation, by act of parliament, in 1645. 11 August, 1811, christening of son, David Smith, at Cameron, Fife, Scotland. Parents are James Smith and Agnes Lesslie. [10] In the will of James Smith, David is noted as a milwright in Glasgow. [7]
22 October, 1813, christening of son, Robert Leslie Smith, at Cameron, Fife, Scotland, to parents James Smith and Agnes Lesslie. [11] In the will of James Smith, Robert Leslie Smith is noted as merchant in Dunoon. [7]
13 December, 1815, christening of son, John Johnston Smith, at Cameron, Fife, Scotland. Parents are James Smith and Agnes Lesslie. [12] In the will of James Smith, John Johnston Smith is noted as bootmaker in St. Andrews. [7]
11 July, 1820, christening of son, James Smith, Junior, at Cameron, Fife, Scotland. Parents are James Smith and Agnes Lesslie. [13] In the will of his father, James Smith, James Smith Junior is noted as merchant in Glasgow. [7]
The 1841 Scotland Census for Cameron lists James Smith, age 65, and Agnes Smith, age 60. His occupation is Linen Weaver. [14] [15]
The 1851 Scotland Census for Cameron, Fifeshire, shows James Smith, age 74, with occupation of weaver, and his wife, Agnus (sic) Smith, age 73. [16] [17]
The 1861 Scotland Census for Cameron, Fifeshire, shows James Smith, age 84, with occupation of feuar (pays land owner, feu, for use of property such as share cropper or other profession), and his wife, Agnes Smith, age 83. Their household includes their daughter, Agnes Smith, age 50, and grandson, James Smith Anderson, age 7. [18] [19]
Agnes Leslie Smith's husband, James Smith, made his will on 13 July, 1862, at Radernie. [7] It appears that he died on or about 8 April, 1869 at Radernie, Cameron, Fife, Scotland.
Agnes Leslie Smith reportedly died on 8 April, 1869, at Rademie, Cameron, Fife, Scotland, at the age of 92. [20]
Agnes Leslie and her husband James Smith appear to be blood relatives. James' mother is Marion Leslie, wife of David Smith who were married 23 Dec 1757 in Newburn, Fife, Scotland. [21] James' maternal grandparents are David Leslie and Isabell Adamson who were married 12 August, 1720, in Cameron, Fife, Scotland. [22] James and Agnes appear to be cousins, but the details remain an item for research.
