Biography

Ferdinand de Lesseps was notable for being the developer of the Suez Canal, which was completed in 1869. A similar attempt at building a Panama Canal ended in failure. The project was eventually bought by the United States and the project completed in 1914.[1]

de Lesseps was born Ferdinand Lesseps on 19 November 1805 in Versailles, the son of Mathieu Lesseps and Catherine Degrivegnée[2]. He married Agathe Delamalle on 19 December 1837 in the first arrondissement of Paris.[3] He later married Louise-Hélène Autard de Bragard on 25 November 1869 in Ismailia, Egypt.[4]
