Ferdinand de Lesseps was notable for being the developer of the Suez Canal, which was completed in 1869. A similar attempt at building a Panama Canal ended in failure. The project was eventually bought by the United States and the project completed in 1914.
de Lesseps was born Ferdinand Lesseps on 19 November 1805 in Versailles, the son of Mathieu Lesseps and Catherine Degrivegnée. He married Agathe Delamalle on 19 December 1837 in the first arrondissement of Paris. He later married Louise-Hélène Autard de Bragard on 25 November 1869 in Ismailia, Egypt.
