In 1948 she is listed on the Osage Tribal rolls as 1/8 Osage-Kaw.[2] Mary is listed on the Native American census rolls, in 1948 as 1/16 Osage. [3] She grew up in Oklahoma.[4]
On 29 December 1942 Mary enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (Inactive Reserve) as an Aviation Cadet. Her enlistment states she had completed 4 years of high school and was working as a clerk.
