Mary E Lester was born between 1846-1848 in Virginia to John and Mary Gardner Lester. She is listed with both of her parents on the 1850 Census[1] in Jacksonville, Floyd, Virginia. Her father passed away in 1853 and she is listed with her widowed mother on the 1860 Census.[2]
Not much is certain, in regards to, Mary after the 1860 Census. It is believed that she married Charles Elder on October 2, 1865 in Floyd, Virginia; but a source has not been located to validate this information. She has not yet been located on the 1870 Census but Mary is listed with Charles and two children: Lafayette and Genevieve Elder; on the 1880 Census in Kentucky.[3]
It is unclear when she passed away but it was after the 1880 Census. The only other record she has been mentioned on is her daughter's marriage record to George Dyson in 1898 in New York:
