Two Abner Lesters

By Carol Sutherland April 22, 2007

I would like to correct something concerning the parents of Abner Lester m. to Martha Patsy Arthur.I have done quite a bit of research concerning this branch of my family and the facts are:
Abner Lester born c1750, son of William Lester and Hannah (last name unknown) died Pike County, Kentucky in 1822, married Martha “Patsy” Arthur, daughter of Gabriel Arthur and Hannah Rebecca “Nikitie”, a Cherokee.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Abner Lester’s first or middle name IS NOT Alexander. Abner Lester and Alexander Lester are two (2) different people.
Proof:
1. Alexander Lester born c 1754 to Bryant Lester and Sarah Winbush. Alexander Lester is named in his father’s (Bryant Lester) will dated May 25, 1795 and recorded in Lunenburg County, Virginia July 14,1796 along with Alexander’s brothers and sisters.
2. Census records offer further proof that they are two different people:
1810 Census of Lunenburg County, Va. – Alexander Lester with 2 males under 15 and 1 male 45 and over, 2 females 10-15 and 1 female 26-44 living next door to his brothers.
1810 Census of Floyd County, Kentucky – Abner Luster 1 male 45 and over, 1 female 16-25 and 1 female 45 and over.
1820 Census Davidson, Tennessee, Nashville has Alexander Lester living there;and filed for a pension in Williamson County, TN, pension started in 1833 at the age of 79.
1820 Census Floyd County, Kentucky – has Abner Lester living next door to his son-in-law, William King.
3. Finally, Alexander Lester died March 24, 1834 in Williamson County, TN where his widow applied for a pension and giving this as date of death.
4. Abner Lester died in Floyd County, KY in 1822. Abner’s will probated in Pike County,KY June 3, 1822. William King was the administrator of his estate. Heirs listed in will Sary King, Hannah Whitt, Rebecky Horton, James Lester, Martha Drake, J.B. Whitt.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Abner by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Abner:

Can we separate these two men? Abner Lester b. 1745 VA died 1822 Kentucky

Alexander Lester b. 1754 VA died Tennessee after 1833

Both apparently had wives named Martha. Nothing anywhere to suggest the wife was Native American.
