Mary was born on 2 November 1845 at Frogmore, Bickleigh, Devon, England to James Lethbridge and Mary (Webber) Lethbridge, although sourcing this family is proving extremely difficult, as the names 'James' and 'Mary' are very frequent.
Mary Ann was baptised 5th December 1845 at Bickleigh, Devon, England.
On 15 February 1863 she married John Blagdon. Mary already had a four-year-old daughter, Ellen (further research is needed to find whether Ellen is actually John's daughter!). The couple moved to Southdown Houses in Maker, Cornwall, England, and had ten children: Mary Jane, John Henry, George, John, William, James, Margaret, Alice, Edward, and Annie. She had 50 grandchildren (and future research may find more!)
Mary died in 1892, aged only 48. Her death certificate says she died of apoplexy, and an inquest was held. From the Western Morning News 14 March 1892:
"Mrs Mary Ann Blagden, aged 48 years, wife of John Blagden, a Dockyard labourer, living at Millbrook, died suddenly on Thursday afternoon. Deceased had for some time suffered from pains in the head and bilious attacks, and on Thursday morning complained of having struck her head, swooned, and went off in an apoplectic fit. Mr Worth attended the deceased twice during the forenoon. In the afternoon she died, those attending her having been unable to administer the prescribed medicines. At an inquest held at the Heart-and-Hand Inn on Saturday a verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned."
