He was born on 3 Jan 1770 in Saint-Joseph parish in Beauce, Province de Quebec. Sponsors at Jean Paul's baptism were Jean Marie Gagnier and the infant's grandmother Marie Mathieu, wife of Jean-Baptiste Grolot; neither sponsor signed the register.
At age 23, Jean Paul married Marie Jobin (age 32) on 1 Oct 1793 in Saint-Joseph parish in Beauce, Bas-Canada: Baptême in Saint-Joseph parish in Beauce on 7 Jan 1770. . Godmother: Marie Mathieu, grandmère; godfather: Jean-Marie Gagnier.
