Bernice L. Becker, 90, of Hixton died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls.
She was born Nov. 8, 1913, in Hixton Township, to Alfred and Gladys (Collins) Letson. She married Virgil Becker Sept. 17, 1930, in Winona, MN. They farmed in the Taylor and Sechlerville areas for many years, moving to Hixton in 1980. Her husband, Virgil, died March 4, 1987.
Bernice was a very active member of her community. She was a founding member of the Sechlerville Ladies Aid and also belonged to the United Methodist Women of Hixton and Interfaith Caregivers. She served for several years on the Taylor School Board. She was a Jackson County 4-H leader for many years with special interests in sewing and gardening. She was a Sunday School teacher and youth program leader with the United Methodist Church. Bernice was also an accomplished seamstress and particularly enjoyed sewing wedding dresses and coats.

Bernice pronounced her name, BURN-is. She was a friendly, social woman who with her husband raised her family on a farm on Highway 95 between Hixton and Taylor. She retired to a ranch home in Hixton next to the old Lutheran church.
