Biography

Orabilis was the daughter and heiress of Ness of Leuchars.[1][2][3][4] She and her father are named as "Nesius filius Willi et Orabile filia sua" in an undated charter recording a donation to the priory of St Andrew's, Scotland.[3]

Orabilis became the first wife of Robert de Quincy.[1][2][3][4] They had at least one child:

Douglas Richardson says they also had a daughter, whose name is not known.[1]

Orabilis's first marriage was formally ended. She subsequently married an Earl of Mar, probably Gillecrist), though there is some disagreement.[1][2][5][6] In an undated charter Orabilis styles herself as "Orabilis comitissa de Mar filia Nesii filii Willi" - "Orabilis countess of Mar daughter of Ness son of William".[3]

Orabilis died before 30 June 1203, when a charter refers to a donation by "quondam Orable matris Seer de Quinci" - "the late Orabilis mother of Saher de Quincy."[3]

Research Notes

Marriages

An undated charter records a donation Orabilis made to Melrose Abbey for the souls of her "Lords" Walter de Berkeley and Robert de Quincy, her brother Roland, and her sister Christine.[3] Walter de Berkeley may well have been a husband of Orabilis: Charles Cawley assumes that Orabilis married him after her marriage to Robert de Quincy ended[3] but other sources say that she married Gilchrist, Earl of Mar.[1][2][5][6] It is possible she married Walter de Berkeley prior to her marriage to Robert de Quincy.

Charles Cawley speculates that the Earl of Mar who was Orabilis's second husband was not Gilchrist but Morgund.[3]

Formerly-shown son Simon de Quincy

Orabilis has previously been shown on WikiTree as mother of Simon de Quincy. In his entry for Saher de Quincy, the Magna Carta Surety Baron, Douglas Richardson refers to a quarrel in 1205-6 between Saher and St Andrew's Cathedral, Scotland over the presentation of a Simon de Quincy to the church of Leuchars in Fife.[7][8] There is no indication how Simon fits into the de Quincy family.

I knew a medieval scholar as her "head researcher" for years. She is deceased. We used to groan and laugh at translation screwups. One i swear i have mentioned before is due to writing styles ling ago. Capitol script "a" had tail flip off top right, not go all the way down the right side like nowadays. I have FIXED IT BEFORE, maybe not here ...Arabella.
I plan soon to do some work on this profile for the Medieval Project

I have now finished the main work I currently intend on this profile. If anyone has firmer well-sourced information about Orabilis's possible marriage to Walter to Berkeley, or about which Earl of Mar she married after the ending of her marriage to Robert de Quincy, please amend appropriately.
