Nils was born in 1700 and moved from Silbodal to Eda, also in Värmland, Sweden, where he became "gränsriddare" or "tullnär", i.e. a ranger controlling the border to Norway. His station was near the place where the glassworks of Eda later opened up and had gigantic padlocks that locked the boom barrier for the bridge where the road to Norway crossed the local river, later used for the farm Bergåsen in Hammar, Eda.
He married Marit Håkansdotter and had five children, of which his two sons Håkan and Anders lived long enough to have children of their own. In the 1750s he lived in Stommen, Nolby in Eda (which may be the same place as his station).
